Habits And Compulsions

A habit is a pattern of behaviour that is generally formed to meet a need and often occurs unconsciously.  When carried out it will create a positive feeling of satisfaction and fulfilment at a time when it is required.

Unfortunately the behaviour continues whether the need is still there or not as the subconscious looks to re-create the positive feeling.

In contrast a compulsion – in simple terms could be described as a behaviour that occurs consciously. An individual is driven by the compulsion which often becomes a ritual – whether it is constant hand washing or checking and rechecking that
an oven has been turned off or a door locked.

The first step to overcoming any habit is a genuine wanting to change.  Hypnosis can be a useful aid to not only breaking the behavioural pattern but also to help you understand why the habit was formed and what purpose it served.
